A NOTE TO PARENTS: In our class, we use the Math Expressions program. One of the main math goals in kindergarten is to get young children to think about sets of objects. Once they understand this, they are ready to put sets together to form a new group- also known as addition. We will use our class computers for this online course. It will be taught during the school day our students. The style of this website is written for an adult to read aloud to the student. The discussion tab above is for students to write comments, likes or dislikes, and ideas about the course in a journal type format (an adult will help them write their entry). Student comments will only be read by our class,not the general public. This course was designed to teach about addition and has 3 different sections: Learning about addition, practicing addition and a real world assignment.
Learning about addition (Lecture)Welcome to the wonderful world of math! When I was a child like you, we sang songs about numbers in my kindergarten class. We did not have computers or iPods to help teach us about math. Can you believe that? Now, kindergarteners have many fun ways to learn about math at school and home. On this website, Mrs. Woodyard and Mrs. Seely will help you learn more about how to add objects together. We will do many fun activities with you! When you add numbers, you will be putting 2 or more groups of objects together. This type of math is called addition. In the real world, people use addition each day to help them do things like cook food for their family, shop for groceries, do projects at home and finish work at their jobs. When people use addition in math, they can add food items together, add money together or combine items into a new group. In this online lesson, you will practice couting groups of objects and will then put these groups together playing fun addition math games. Addition may sound hard, but it really is fun! Once you have practiced addition with the Ipod apps and computer games with your teacher, you will have a chance to add real pieces of fruit with Mrs. Woodyard and Mrs. Seely in a fun math project you will share with your class. This new adventure for our class will help us get smarter and smarter each time we practice adding objects. Now that you know putting 2 (or more) groups of objects together is addition, we are ready to practice counting groups and adding objects on the computer and iPods. You are going to have lots of fun learning to add! Now, let's move on to the practice lab below.....
Practicing addition (Lab)
iPod Touch activities: Use our class iPod Touch to play the following addition games:
1) Math Train- Touch the addition cloud to begin. The train will chug along with an addition problem on it. Touch the Show me balloon so that you can see the 2 groups of balloons to count. They are 2 different colors, but that does not change the answer. Practice addition with your teacher by counting each balloon in the sky. You must count all of the balloons to add the 2 sets together. Once you have touched and counted each balloon, select the correct answer. If you get the addition problem right, a bird will fly down into the tree. Keep practicing addition until you have 10 birds in your tree.
2) Alien Math- Touch the Toy Story picture to begin this game. You will see 2 spaceships with an addition problem on them. Your job is to count the spaceships and add them together to select the right answer below. If you get the correct answer, the spaceship will fly up and land after the equal sign. A new addition problem will appear. Continue this game until you have tried 10 addition problems with your teacher.
3) Cloud Math- For this iPod game, you will need a bowl of cotton balls and a tray to practice adding with the teacher. You will see an addition problem at the top of the screen. Using your cotton balls, count out the first number of "clouds" and then the second number of "clouds" on your tray. Now line up the "clouds" in a row and using what you know about addition, count all of the "clouds" to get the correct answer. If you get the answer correct, the clould will fly up to the top of the screen after the equal sign. Try more problems until you get 5 clouds filled up at the bottom of your screen.
Online activities: The following activites are for you to practice using addition on the computer.
Math Expressions Math Mats:http://www.eduplace.com/kids/mthexp/gk/emanip.html Your teacher teach you how to count sets of objects on a math mat. Go to COUNTERS and select the TWO NUMBERS math mat. We will be using this to practice adding 2 sets of objects together. The teacher will say an object and how many to stamp on each side so you can add them together. You will solve the addition problem on a white board first and then click on the bottom number icon to check your answer. You may try your own addtion problems with the math mats.
Marble Math game: http://www.abcya.com/addition.htm Your teacher will help you play a game called Marble Math. The pirate wants to know the answer to an addition problem. Click and drag the marbles to count them to solve the addition problem. This game gives a lot of fun practice with addition. You can also play this game during math free choice time in class.
Juggling George game: http://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/games/juggling_george/juggling_george.html You will be playing the Juggling George game and adding fruit for George to juggle. The man with the yellow coat will tell you how many fruits to give to George to juggle. For our addition lesson, click on 2 kinds of fruit to equal how many George wants to juggle. For example, if they say 3, you could click on 2 bananas and 1 apple because 2+1=3. The teacher will help you figure out what addition problems you can use for this game.
Oscar's Trash Collection game: http://pbskids.org/sesame/games/oscar_trash_collection.html This is Oscar's Trash Collection. In this game, you help Oscar sort his junk by color on the shelves. Once you have sorted by color, use a white board to write an addition problem. If you put 3 orange items on a shelf and 2 blue items on the other shelf, your addition problem would be 3+2=5 items.

Lunar Lander game: http://funschool.kaboose.com/formula-fusion/games/game_lunar_lander.html This game does not have objects to count, but you may use our math counters to play it. You will see an addition problem (like 3+4=_ ). Add all of the counters together to get the answer. When you see the answer below, your job is to click on and safely land the spaceship on the correct answer.
Math Popper game: http://funschool.kaboose.com/formula-fusion/carnival/games/game_math_popper.htmIn this game, you will need to use counters to add the numbers to solve the addition problem. Then, you may click on the popper pin and try to pop the balloon that shows the right answer. This game feels fast, but you can still take your time to add the counters and then answer the question.
Real world addition (Assignment) In this activity, you will get to use real food to show how you can put groups of food together with addition. Click on the Assignment tab on the right hand side of this page to read the real world addition assignment. The page also contains addition forms for you to print out and use with the activity.
